Cooling systems for the marine industry
In 1959, NRF developed the box cooler: an effective solution to prevent the contamination suffered by surface-water-cooled marine engines. The product was a success. Ever more vessels switched to NRF box coolers to cool their engines. Currently, NRF is the market leader in this sector and our products find their way to numerous clients in the international marine industry.
Short turnaround timesBox coolers for the marine sector
In order to safeguard the superior quality of NRF cooling systems for the international marine industry, the production line in Mill underwent a thorough reorganisation in 2007. Since then, we have again been able to satisfy a worldwide, increasing demand for box coolers. NRF offers the shortest possible turnaround time. The process from order to dispatch generally takes less than six weeks.
Box coolers are an excellent alternative to existing cooling systems such as plate coolers and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. NRF developed the first box coolers in the 1950s for small inland waterway vessels. In the meantime, NRF has expanded into a prominent international supplier of box coolers for the world’s largest shipyards and fleets.
Custom-made box coolersThe successful concept of the box cooler is also reflected in our wide range of shell and tube heat exchangers for water-water and/or oil cooling. Within this you have a choice of various diameters and a selection of materials, lengths and internal detail. Moreover, in the case of indifferent or poor water quality, NRF can provide your shell and tube coolers with a protective coating to prevent corrosion, erosion and calcification.
NRF’s box coolers are available in fixed sizes, and can also be made to measure. This flexible way of working has meanwhile resulted in designs for more than a thousand different models of box coolers for the marine industry. NRF box coolers are a combination of high-grade quality, short delivery times and NRF’s expertise.
Custom made heat exchangersAnti-fouling for box coolers
Thanks to their unusually compact construction, NRF’s shell and tube coolers are easy to build in to numerous systems such as main engines, generator engines, compressors and winches. Besides the extensive range of standard heat exchangers, NRF can realise a made-to-measure design for you. For custom work too the very shortest delivery times apply.
NRF’s box coolers are theoretically maintenance and fault free. Not for nothing are they used on ships operating worldwide. As for every cooling system exposed to seawater, there is always the risk of fouling. Although a safety margin is always implemented in the design of NRF cooling systems, their operation may be detrimentally affected by fouling and growth of animal organisms like barnacles, mussels etc. As answer to this, NRF supplies the repeatedly tested Impressed Current Anti Fouling System (ICAF), which prevents this biological fouling.
Integration into the vessel
NRF has implemented the ICAF system for many years in box cooler installations. A great advantage of this system is that it is extremely effective on the one hand, and is environmentally friendly on the other. It combats the growth of animal organisms in a well-thought-out way and can be connected to the vessel’s control systems, so that the operation and lifetime of the anodes may easily be checked.
